As a Roadway/Site Engineer-in-Training (EIT), you will support the planning, design, and delivery of roadway and site development projects while continuing to grow your technical and professional skills under the guidance of licensed Professional Engineers. What are the core responsibilities for the role? Assist with the preparation of roadway design plans, profiles, and cross sections using AutoCAD Civil 3D Support design tasks related to grading, drainage, utilities, water, and sewer systems Prepare calculations, quantities, and exhibits in support of design development Assist with the development of technical memoranda, design plans, specifications, and reports Support permitting and agency coordination efforts in various jurisdictions Contribute to engineer’s opinions of probable cost and quantity takeoffs at various project stages Perform quality control checks on plans and documents under the supervision of a Professional Engineer Coordinate with project team members across multiple disciplines Participate in client meetings, internal coordination meetings, and project reviews as appropriate Provide construction support services, including responding to RFIs and assisting with construction observation tasks Qualifications, Skills, and Competencies: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or ability to obtain within a defined timeframe 2–4 years of relevant civil engineering experience, with an emphasis on roadway or transportation design Working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D; experience with Bluebeam and Microsoft Office preferred Familiarity with roadway geometry, drainage design, and utility coordination concepts Ability to follow established design standards, specifications, and agency requirements Strong written and verbal communication skills Organized, detail-oriented, and motivated to grow technically and professionally Ability to work effectively in a team environment and maintain positive working relationships Exposure to municipal or state transportation projects preferred Familiarity with local, state, or federal agency design standards preferred Experience supporting both public and private sector projects preferred Why would a candidate want this job? As a Survey Crew Chief, you will have the opportunity to be involved in large, multi-discipline projects while developing diverse skill sets. Key Responsibilities Competent in using conventional survey equipment and GPS systems in the collection of data or the placement of construction control. Including digital levels. Well-versed in all field techniques related to boundary retracement, design support, and construction surveying support, topographic mapping, and Right of Way mapping. Responsible for clear, informative, and accurate field notes. Efficiently complete daily topographic, boundary and control surveys for design and construction surveys Communicate with the client’s on-site representatives, when needed, to ensure satisfaction with work performed and the communication of his needs to the office support team. Identify and report unique or potential construction difficulties to the office support team Analyze survey maps, locate monumentation and physical evidence required in the retracement of property lines Ensures that field information is accurately collected and transferred to the office support team Comfortable performing field and office tasks. Skills, Knowledge and Expertise This position requires the operation of a company vehicle. All candidates must hold a valid driver’s license and will be subject to a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check. Employment is contingent upon meeting Horrocks' Fleet & Safety minimum requirements. Candidates will be asked to provide consent for the MVR check as part of the hiring process. 8-10+ years of progressively responsible surveying experience, including experience leading field survey crews on transportation, municipal, land development, and boundary surveying projects. 5+ years of experience serving as a Survey Crew Chief or equivalent leadership role, with demonstrated ability to plan daily field operations, assign work, mentor junior staff, and ensure quality deliverables. Proven ability to lead and develop survey crews, maintain project schedules, coordinate with project managers and clients, and resolve field-related challenges independently. Must be willing and able to initially work primarily in the field, but also have the ability to work on office tasks Experience in topographic surveys, transportation surveys, ALTA/NSPS surveys, land boundary surveys, subdivisions and records of survey, elevation certificates, construction staking, and data management. Exposure to first and second-order control surveys is a plus Fluent with Trimble equipment. Mobile, aerial, and ground-based lidar scanning experience a plus Working knowledge of Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, Office, and MS Office.
